Can I use a windows xp laptop key on a desktop

so i am about to buy a pc with a custom case.
problem is it has no os installed on the hard drive.
i have and old xp laptop running ubuntu due to some problems it had.
Can i use my old xp laptop key to run xp on my desktop
and i do have an xp cd
Also on my other xp the key that is produced using produkey is different to the sticker on the side of the desktop so would one of them work?
and help would be appriciated

Your license key is good for one computer. If you install the OS on another, rightfully, you should uninstall it on the other.
(Due to Window update potential problem ? )
No idea why sticker Key is different. Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder will also show you the key and CD of the installed OS on your hard drive. Run this and compare to produkey output. You could try the sticker key, I guess
