Advice on new motherboard choice

Hi all i have been doing a lot of research into setting up crossfire and i was looking to upgrade to an am3 board to do this but i came across this am2+ gigabyte board

It states it would run crossfire at 8x. The thing i want to know is will having crossfire running at 8x show a lot less perfomance than running crossfire at
16x?

I have seen this am3 board that supports crossfire at 16x

Its quite a lot more expensive than the gigabyte board i mentioned above hence why i am interested in what the performance difference would be.

I would rather avoid upgrade to am3 if possible as this would then require new ram etc which will end up costing me a fortune.

Not unless you install the fastest ATI video card that you can find.
