I am thinking about building a server for gaming, not now but after quite some time. Perhaps 2x Opterons or Xeons with a new (GX300) series graphics from NVidia, (3 billion transistor count and possibly 6 gb memory I’ve heard). I am thinking is this viable for a desktop computer to game with, and not update for a while and if so, how much would it cost? Also, would it be possible to run it on a normal OS or would you have to use a server OS. I’m not too tech-savvy so this might seem very daft to you. Budget will be quite high as this is for early/mid next year.

No point in worrying about this now, technology updates so quickly that you should really give yourself a 2-4 week window at most for getting prices and picking items.
