APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: within a month

BUDGET RANGE: between 1500-1600 for my needs, but less is always better

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: gaming with lots of eye candy, VMware, surfing, movies, home/school stuff

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor, OS, will be using windows 7 64 bit

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg if possible, tho i have a tiger direct within driving distance

PARTS PREFERENCES: i7 920, hd5870

OVERCLOCKING: Yes ~4.0ghz SLI OR CROSSFIRE: yes in the near future

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1440x900 for now, 1920x1200 or higher in the future

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:starting off with 1 5870, will move to two in the future and 3 if need be in the far future, so i need suggestions for a good mobo that overclocks well, as well as one that can fit 3 5870s, and a good psu, guessing ~1000w so i dont have to worry about psu upgrade and hopefully i can use the comp for 4 years or so.

The motherboard you picked should be a good one.

You should be able to 3xCrossfire those on the 850HX without any worries. It has 6 PCIE connectors and 70 amps on the 12v rail. The 1000HX has twin 40amp rails so the 850 may handle 3 GPUs better.

Thanks, that saves a few bucks, but does the difference between the corsair 850hx and the 850tx warrant the price difference? I know that one is modular, but is there any other difference/would you recommend a modular?

I would save the money and just get the 850tx, you can hide the cables under the last HDD bay.

Nice build btw, Only thing i would look into is to upgrade the case a little to maybe a COOLER MASTER HAF 922 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Yeah, that case seems pretty nice... and it looks like it could eat small children. Thanks, the last build I did was for a buddy of mine a while ago and had a q9550 and a 285 in it. Cost about as much as this one and im hoping for A LOT more bang for the buck. Oh crud one more thing. What after market cooler would any of you guys recommend. Once again I "plan" on hitting 4ghz with the i7 920. Thanks for the advice.

if you want the best
megahalems

however there are cheaper alternatives ($30-40 less, assuming you get a nice fan with the megahalems) which will run 4-6 degrees hotter

One: I would change your motherboard to EVGA X758-TR SLI (x16,x16,x8) motherboard. This board has better SLI support.

Second: I would pick up the Thermalright TRUE Black Edition (newest one). The TRUE is still considered by many to be the best Air Cooler. As very close performer is the CoGaGe TRUE Spirit. Pretty much the same HSF bu at half the price. My favorite is the Xigmatek Dark Knight S1283V.
