windows xp won't read dvd drive. replaced drive, removed filters in registry, deleted and reinstalled. nothing works.

Does BIOS see the drive in the detailed boot checkup ?
If not is the pc setup IDE or SATA in bios ? Is the drive IDE or SATA ?
Do you have more than 1 IDE drives ?

pc set up for IDE. drive is SATA, but in bios it skips on by that drive. i had at one time 2 drives, one was a cd rom and the second was a dvd drive. now i just have a dvd.

Switch SATA sockets around until BIOS can see the drive. Without BIOS recognizing it proper, windows will never see it. If DVD drive is SATA, unplug the cables, see if it can recognize the HDD on SATA alone. Switch to RAID, see if can catch the drive that way. Otherwise, it's either a bad HDD or bad MB, hope you can RMA either one.
