I'm re-posting this topic in General Discussion so as John Van Kirk can take a look at my original thread.

Please don't recategorise Grumpy.

Many Thanks

Sorry the link doesn't work

Hello,
I'm using Windows 7 on my PC and Vista on my Laptop. Right clicking on Vista the format option is there but errors. Downloaded 'HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool, V2.2.3' but errors with 'There is no media in the specified device.' ?

I would try formatting on an XP machine whose formatting abilities are better known to me and if the error message persists I think you have a bad drive.

Thanks, I'll give it a go.

Hey, try this:
http://download.cnet.com/HP-USB-Di [...] 74082.html

Same result as HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool V2.2.3 - There is no media in specified drive.
Thanks for your input.

I think it's missing the MBR which is fixable through CMD. However, I forgot the steps but google something like "How to format MBR with CMD"

Tried File Scavenger Version 3.2 - Disk Physical 5 Drive not found. Devices see the stick as I:

Try what i suggested.

MBR is reconised in Windows 7 command line.

Try the usb tool from hp again and change format to fat32 or ntfs

Already tried NTFS and no joy. The stick is a 32gig HD.

Eh.. I'm out of ideas.. try to run it as fat32 instead and see any luck there is all i can say now

Thanks for all your suggestions, I'm now thinking about the problem in a different way.

I don't know anybody with XP.
Thanks for your input.

One thing I have always found able to fix most problems with unformated drives is gparted, its a bootable utility.

Download: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

Hi

Downloaded "Gparted - Live" and burnt as an image to a CD. Booted my PC from cold, hung for a while as it read CD, pressed F12, only booted a windows utility. I'm using Windows 7.

Thanks for your suggestion.

My flash drive pen is going in the bin.

The best piece of advice i read was from John Van Kirk - "Many times flashdrives or even removable drives become corrupted if they are disconnected abruptly before cached data is completely written to the drive and the files are closed".

I won't make the same mistake twice
