New Use for Old Optical Drive

Okay everybody, I have a challenge/question.

I saw in a review for one of those storage boxes you put in one of your 5.25" expansion bays that he took an old optical drive, gutted it, and then reused it as a storage box.

Do y'all have any idea how I would go about doing this? I know this might not be the right forum, but....

There are form factors out there that will fit inside a standard 5.25" bay. I would imagine its probably a miniture MB, CPU, RAM etc running linux and all he's really using from the old optical drive is the power feeds. (BTW you can have some fun with the laser if it was a burner by upping the power)
