I have a home-built computer whose drive is toast but the other hardware is good. I would like to transfer a newly-recovered compaq presario XP system HDD from the 2020NX Presario to this computer. Will the OS balk? Does it need a real Compaq environment to validate the OS? I haven't actually "registered" the newly recovered system yet, if that matters at all.
Thanks.

If you are lucky the OS will find all the new hardware, and you will be able to remove no longer needed drivers, BUT, you will not be able to validate XP because OEM versions of Windows are only valid on the original hardware.

Thanks, I was afraid of that. So you're saying even if it I do validate it on the Compaq, once transfered to a different PC at a later date Windows Update would find it "not genuine" ?

Yes, when XP sees the major hardware changes you will be required to validate again.
