So I decided to upgrade my computer with a new E8400 just to hold me over until all the new intel chips come out and the dust settles and I build a whole new comp. However I am having some issues. Along with the new processor I also bought a new motherboard.
Previous Equipment:
Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz (Dont remember the name)
Gigabyte 965-ds3
New Equipment:
E8400
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P
So putting in the new mother board and CPU the system would turn on, then shut off, then turn on, then shut off, repeatedly by itself. So I put in the old motherboard with the new CPU and all the fans and stuff would turn on but my monitor wasnt registering anything. So I put in the old CPU with the old motherboard and it booted up just fine.
So I am guessing that my PSU cant handle the new motherboard and CPU, and the CPU is not compatible with the old motherboard. However I am not certain and do not have the extra gear around to check. So I was wondering if any one else had any ideas. Thx.
Also, give the sticky about problems a read through. Shortstuff did a lot of work and great job to provide that for help with issues. Try all the stuff there. Also, double check every cable plugged into the new mobo.
I have my doubts that the PSU is the issue, that would have shown up before just a mobo/CPU upgrade. Also, update your 965 mobo Bios before trying to put a 45nm chip in it. It will require the latest bios if its going to support it at all.

Well I put in the old CPU into the new Motherboard and its doing the same thing as with the new CPU. It starts up, but the monitor doesnt register anything, then after about 30 secs it shuts down, then after another 30 secs it boots back up again, and just continues to turn off and then on by itself. I double checked and my old board doesnt support the new CPU. Also I have checked and double checked and triple checked all of the connections.
I dont know if this has anything to do with it but the power connection to the motherboard has slots for 8 pins, whereas my old motherboard only had slots for 4 pins and thats what my PSU has. But the 4 pins fit into 4 of the 8 pins of the new motherboard. I hope that made sense I dont know what its called.

Nope, I know exactly what you're refering too. As long as you have the 4 pin plug plugged into the only 4 spots it will fit, you should be fine. If you don't have that plugged in, then your CPU isn't getting the juice it needs.
If you have the 4pin plugged into 4 of the 8 slots, and it's not working, then the mobo could be bad.
