I haven't been able to find very many benchmarks or definitive results when looking at a system built around high resolution gaming.

I'm thinking about building a system , here's my system thread: link

I'm not sure whether I should go with a 2GB video card, 1x1gb video card, or 2x1GB video cards.

I've been looking at the new ATI 5850 because it outperforms the 4890 , has DX11 optimization, and only costs 50 bucks more.

I mainly want to be able to run my games in 5040x1050 using my Matrox TH2G Digital edition.

Anyone have any suggestions on motherboard and video cards? Thanks in advance.

They just did a review of the 5850, not sure if you saw it yet, but they do crossfire in there;

And here is an article about judging vRAM for your GPU;

The new ATI 58XX cards support EyeFinity, which basically enables you to span your games over multiple monitors. The cards will be out sometime in the 4Q of 2009, so that might be a good option for you.

Well, I already have the Matrox TH2G which supports 3 monitors. It also supports crossfire, which eyefinity currently does not.

I guess I'm mainly looking for wide screen gaming benchmarks where there were 1 card vs 2 cards vs cards with 2GB of ram vs 1gb. I just need to know what improves the performance specific to wide screen gaming.

Thanks for the links and info so far.

Well I would imagine the same logic of greater resolutions requiring more vRAM applies.

Yeah most definitely. I do appreciate the link you sent. I really wish they had included the 5850 and in crossfire, so I can see that performance. Their resolution of 2560x1600 is still a good million pixels shy of the 5040x1050. Granted, I don't really want to run the games and maximum settings, just want them to run smoothly. I'll keep my eyes peeled for such tests, I'm sure as the weeks go by, they will surface. Maybe they'll come out with a 5850 with 2GB of vRAM, I'll be all over that.
