I have been trying to upgrade my series one, software 3.x, Tivo with a
larger hard drive. I want to replace the 30G HD with a 160G hard drive.

I have been using the mfs tools & pipe command to do this.
i.e. "mfsbackup -TAO - /dev/hdc |mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi - /dev/hdd"

However, when I install the larger drive it boots up just fine but the
play back is choppy and slow. Any ideas?

May be some settings on the replacement drive - acoustic management, etc., -
which you would have to adjust with a vendor-specific utility. Also, I
believe there is some option to mfsrestore to increase the cache or swap
space or something, that is recommended with larger drives. It's probably
mentioned in the Hinsdale procedures.
