I was looking at getting 2 WD Black 1tb's. I always hate installing and installing stuff off my OS drive, because I thought that got it all fragmented. And with games, I do that a lot. My question is, which of these would be better:
1) Partitioning part of 1 1tb to use for OS only. (If so, how much, and should I go ahead and throw stuff like office on it, or just the OS)
2) Get a smaller, fast drive for OS only. I really don't want to do a SSD. If this option is better, can someone suggest one? I would still probably want to throw in the 2 1tb's, would I run into problems running the 3 HD's? (It's my first build)
3) Am I totally off on the fragmenting thing, and should I just throw stuff onto one of the 1 tb's.

Thanks for any help, ordering today.

For your SSD questions, this might be a good read

Looking at the numbers here, the WD Blacks, except for the 2 TB model seem pretty poor choices, given the competition. Don't forget the noise and temperature charts.

As for mixing it up, and fragmenting all that, there is a simple way around that and that is partitioning. Utilizing a single drive scenario as the simpless case, putting your OS on C, then your pagefile (fixed size) and temp files on D means that both those things always stay on the faster outside edge of the drive. Taking the concept further ..... games ..... programs ..... data ...... and finally backups .... could be the next 4 partitions but that's a matter of personal preference. Idea is keep the stuff you want to go fast PERMANENTLY on the outer edges of the drive....and leave the inner part of the disk to the slow stuff like backups and data.

Thanks for the reply. And I meant the 2 TB's Blacks, sorry. So how big should I set the partition for Win 7, and how much for the pagefile/temp?

So is it really worth the extra money to go with a SSD, Velociraptor, or Spinpoint rather than a partitioned 2 TB? Is the difference really noticeable?
