I plan to get the parts from either newegg or Fry's Electronics so it would be nice if you use those to find the parts. This computer is just for everyday general use, might leave it on all day, and for some games. I prefer AMD/ATI. So far I came up with:

AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor - Retail

I am open to suggestion; I need help with the ram and mobo. I'm also wondering if the optical drive can both read and write discs, and what kind of monitor I should get. I have around a $800 budget (not including monitor, keyboard, mouse, OS etc.)

wow, I think that is a first time that I've been unable to find a good combo for amd.
anyway, this is a good mb: GB GA-MA785GMT-UD2H http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128397 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128394 and a good memory: OCZ Gold 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227346
I do like kingston too, g-skills are good too
I don't know how does it fits your build in the budget but I recommend you hunt for combos

What do you plan on using this system for when you say everyday use, just youtube and web surfing? When you play games do you need max detail? Also what size monitor are you considering? Walk into a local store and look at them and try to decide on size as that determines what GPU you need.

Yes the optical drive can read and write.

Also, why the 900 vs the 300 illusions? It would save you quite a bit of money and space, if you want to go with the 900 swap the PSU out for this combo, the TP-650 actually has better efficiency than the earth watts surprisingly and comes out cheaper with combo.
