[Solved] HD4850-OUTRAGEOUS TEMPS!

I am getting idle 80C and 100C on load using the auto fan thing. When i enable manual and make it go to around 40-50% i get about 65C to 70C on IDLE and if I want to game i have to go to 80% FANSPEED to get around 80-90C on load : :sweat:

yeah is there any way to fix this

There are tons of over-reaction posts out there like yours, try searching.

You can increase the fan speed, get a different HSF, or get used to high temps in top end card with mediocre coolers.

100C isn't outrageous, it's just not as good as lower, these newer chips handle higher temps much better than the older ones.

Exactly which card do you have, make and model, please.
If you have the 'reference' cooler like this:

putting a slot cooler like one of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] e%20Cooler

under it to draw out the hot air can make a large difference.
Also, if the card has been installed for a while or you live in a dusty area or have pets like cats or dogs there is a chance the fan and heatsink have become clogged.
Take out the card and clean it out. I use a cotton bud moistened in pure alcohol for the fan and a good pair of lungs for the heatsink although you can buy cans of 'compressed air' as well

So you think its fine if I leave it on stock? I just don't want my card to die on my right now I know things break all the time and hopefully you're right about this

I wasn't really self concience about my temps until like a few months ago

Yeah i have the stock single slot like the one in your picture.

I found something odd though, my "subvendor" is ATi, its not an actual company like asus or gigabyte

All the 4xxx / 5xxx cards use ATI technology just like all the 2xx GT/GTX cards are nVidia

Well if it's not a new card, then like Coozie says, try cleaning it, it does make a big difference on ALL cards (difference can be 10s of degrees).

You can add an exhaust fan which may help, the main thing is that it also adds noise too (I find louder but lower pitched than the HSF).

As for the subvendor, ATi does make cards, nVidia doesn't, therefore they have an ID in the system and while it may be a mistake it's an option, unlike nV.

The slot cooler coozie suggested should help a bunch. $10 for some where around 10 degrees seems like a good deal. Unless your system already has good airflow, meaning it has at least one intake and one exhaust fan other than the PSU.

or could be the cards thermal paste i've found a few ati cards with that problem

Omg!!! Thanks so much! I just cleaned it and at 40% fan speed i am avg 55C on idle after cleaning it a bit. :bounce:

thanks so much! All of you too who helped but seriously last time I cleaned it and it barely made a difference even tho i found loads of dust like ALOT. This time it was more like half of that and it decreased the temps by like 15C-ish

Step 1 - ATI / nVidia designs a "reference board"
Step 2 - Asus, Gigabyte, EVGA, XFX and all the others release identical boards with no real difference other than color and name stamped on them. These vendors won't invest time and money into tweaked designs until any kinks in reference design are solved.
Step 3 - Each vendor tweaks the design a bit and releases modified boards.
Step 4 - Step 3 as far as they can pus it.

ATi also actually makes their own boards too, though not nearly as many as XFX and Gigabyte and the like.

It's perfectly normal for his card to be manufactured by ATi
