So I did a clean install from Windows XP to Windows 7, the thing is I have a 320 gig hard drive, with a 7 gig partition for back up. What I dont get is I did a clean install, nothing on my computer now but Windows 7, but it now only shows my hdd as having 32 gig left. any ideas, where the rest of my hdd is? when I go into system it shows most of the hard drive taken up but not by what.
There's been a flaw in that installation. Download the free version of Spacemonger from this site http://www.sixty-five.cc/sm/ and see what it shows up. You may find a folder named c:\windows\winsxs is oversized but that usually only happens when the system has been running for a while.
If you didn't remove xp before installing 7, you may now have a folder called windows.old. This is your old XP install. You can freely copy any files you may need from there. I believe disk cleanup has the option to remove old installs. if not, it should be safe to delete the windows.old folder manually.
