XP won't boot into safe mode

Hi,
I have a notebook on which I have just managed to remove a ransomware virus (metropolitan police banner, etc).

The notebook nows boots into windows normally and appears free of malware, but when I boot with f8 and select any of the safemode choices I get a flicker of a blue screen and it restarts instead.

I'd appreciate any suggestions you have on this, thanks.

Hopefully you deleted all restore points, if not, do so, as you don't want to reintroduce the virus.

Suggest you boot from Windows CD and repair-install the OS..
