I am thinking of getting either the Clevo 432 or the Asus A25H laptop but am
not sure about their reliability. Does anyone have any experience/opinion
with these two brands?
Cheers,
Tom

I know nothing about either brand, but there may be reviews available on
them. Do a Google search.

With regards to the Clevo "brand," you might want to check the
reliability records of Sager, ProStar and Alienware, as these are also
made by Clevo.
But if reliability is of significant concern to you, get a Thinkpad.

Even better, get a Panasonic Toughbook.

or Dell. Believe it or not, my Dell i8200 has been more reliable than
my Clevo er, I mean Sager 5670. The Sager is great but I've had to
send it in twice in 1 year. I have not had a single problem with the
Dell in 2 years.

Yes, but you are a sample set of one.
Many people have had many problems
with Dull notebooks.

Can you back up that claim? All I've heard are positive things about Dell
laptops, and I own one, my granddaughter owns one, my daughter owns one, my
grandson just received one from me, and several of my neighbors own one.
None of us have encountered a single Dell-related problem.
I also have a Gateway. It has been problem free as well.

How is it any different from your sample set for the Panasonic? I
wasn't asked to get together data showing how satisfied Dell owners
were. I provided my experience. Of course I've heard lots of stories
but I don't believe half of them. I've heard stories about the
toughluckbook myself and don't really believe all of them.
OTOH, I know people, and have heard lots of good reports, about the
i8200. Based on my experience with one, I believe most of them.
BTW, I love my Sager but it is a fact that I needed to send it in
twice to be fixed. Despite this, I'll probably buy a Sager next time
rather than a Dell. Sager generally offers more for the money.

I loved my 8200 while it was working. The motherboard shorted out and
now I'm fighting with Dell to repair it. Also, the CDRW/DVD drive
won't write to 're-writable' CD's. I tried several brands. Writes to
one-shot CD's just fine. And, the power cords caught on fire, twice
(from fraying). The letters on some of the keys on the keyboard are
rubbing off (important letters like "A" and "M" ). The brick on the
last power cord just died one day. That's three power cords in 2
years.
Very much on the plus side, I like that I can sit with it in my lap,
resting against bare skin if I'm wearing shorts, and it doesn't get
'hot'. Those two fans keep it nice and cool. Also, it comes with a
floppy drive (invaluable when my professors demand homework on floppy
instead of CD or e-mail). It also runs beautifully as a dual-boot
Windows/Linux system. The nVidia GeoForce 440 was also supposed to be
the bottom end of what would support Star Wars: Knights of the Old
republic, but, the board died before I could test it.

Did you ever learn anything re asus? My wife is interested in one of their
ultra-light notebooks because it's white (and will be kept in the white
kitchen).
No point in everyone getting their panties in a twist over choosing a laptop
by its appearance, I've already been through that, I'd just like to know
about Asus or anyone else who makes UL notebooks.
thanks.

FWIW I bought a 13" Asus TravelNote (or something like that)
in December 2000 (just after it came out) for one of my kids
who studies overseas. The hardware is OK, however we kept
running into highly annoying problems with some software
Asus had bundled with the unit, and support was worse
than non-existent.
This is admittedly a sample of one, and does not directly
answer questions about reliability. However, my personal
decision was to never buy again a product from a company
that does not provide adequate support (and this not only
for computers).
Of course YMMV.

My wife purchase, over my objections, an Averatec 3550H, moderately
light (3 lb, 1.4kg) with AMD 1800+ Mobile, 12 in screen, 40MB HD, USB2.
The laptop was $800 at Sam's Club. I think she must have 4000 hrs on
it. The keyboard is good but very small and awkward for large hands.
She loves it. She does Powerpoint with embedded avi which I was betting
would never work for presentation via projector. This laptop must have
100,000 air miles on it also.
Asus is a well-known ODM (original design manufacturer) of laptops and
desktop mainboards. The ODMs sell their designs to the name brands,
although Clevo is not a real big name, IMO. The design and
manufacturing process of laptops has matured to the point that hardware
failure is rather rare anymore, being limited mostly to RAM and HD.
Personally, the software supplied with most laptops is usually
crippleware to begin with and can be replaced at moderate or low cost.
It is never a reason IMO to disqualify the hardware.
addendum: hardware failures are cropping up in Toshiba and Dell
notebooks with, again, they never learn, desktop 3Ghz P4s, with
overheating to failure. So, the manufacturing process should be
described as "mostly mature". How Tosh and Dell can ethically market
these furnaces in a notebook package is, well, mysterious.
