Iomega external hard drive did not read

trying to backup a friends pics, music and docs, prior to XP re-install (malware) to external Iomega drive with USB connect. Their Windows XP PC doesn't see the external drive after running. My notebook (Windows 7) sees drive automatically (as a Samsung device?). "Add Hardware". Help?
