Best Intel Processor for Photoshop

I'm looking to build a new PC to solely run Photoshop CS4 and want to know which is the best processor to use. Is the i7 better than the Core2 Quads or are they both overkill - could an i5 with fast scratch disks and plenty of RAM do just as well?
Cheers, NeilC

  1. The Intel Core i7-975 Extreme Edition: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2009-desktop-cpu-charts/Adobe-Photoshop-CS-4,1387.html

The much less expensive i7-920 and i5-750 are quite good.

Why would ANYONE even offer the 975? I7 860 is your best bet.
The OP asked which one is the best, not which one is the best for his money. I agree that the i7-860 is a good buy, but at $80 more than the i7-750, it might not be the best deal.
  3. Best for the money. $239.99

750 doesn't have hyperthreading and HT would be very useful in photoshop
Unfortunately the benchmarks don't show that Hyperthreading is very useful: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2009-desktop-cpu-charts/Adobe-Photoshop-CS-4,1387.html
  5. I would think the difference is not based on hyperthreading, but the ddifference in clock speed.

  6. Does Photoshop CS4 utilise hyperthreading in a big enough way to justify the higher processor price?
  7. From the benches i would say no.

The comparison is between an i7-750 and an i7-860. We know that the i7-860 is faster and more expensive. What would be required is the same benchmark of an i7-860 with and without Hyperthreading. Don't get me wrong; I'd also go with the i7-860, but not only because the Photoshop benchmark results are slightly better.
