Hello,
I have a verizon FIOS router and want to attach an external hard drive so that I can back up my laptops and desk top over the network
how do i know if my router can support this and what is the best device to use
Usually if your router supports NAS it'll have that feature listed with all the others. If it doesn't though, you can always buy an actual NAS and just hook it up to your regular router. What's the model of your router?

Try using USB external drive then enable file sharing on you OS. Next just copy and paste to the drive. Vista, XP and 7 al support file and printer sharing. The desktop can just copy and paste to the USB drive, but laptop has to be copied from the laptop to the share folder then copied again onto the USB drive.thanks Elvis has left the building.
