How does the 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 compare to the 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 230M? Is the nvidia GeForce 230M faster than the ATI Radeon 4570? Are they close in speed, or is one very noticeably quicker than the other?

According to the charts available on Wikipedia, the GT230M is a 48 stream-processor chip with 128-bit GDDR3, making it equivalent to the desktop 9600GSO (which itself is a cut-down 9600GT). The Radeon 4570 uses 80 of AMD's weaker stream-processors and 64-bit DDR2/GDDR3, making it equivalent to the desktop 4550. It's clear that the GT230M outclasses the 4570 by a wide margin. I'd expect a GT230M to get performance comparable to a desktop 4650 with GDDR3.

They are very new and laptops aren't tested that often.
