I recently built a system for my brother, approved in full on this site, specs on bottom.

After a month he has been having some issues with it locking up on him during random activites. Just regular web surfing or listening to music, not a specific program.

How do I go about testing for the problem? The only thing I can think of is that he has a newer mobo/processor/etc. but there is an older video card in the system, an 8800GTS.

Perhaps the video card is locking it up? It should be fully compatible, though. I will check for updated drivers on everything. Maybe the DDR3 is causing issues?

Note: Overheating is not the issue, core temp gauge never goes high.

Thanks for any help.

Also using an 8800GTS, he doesn't game now so didn't need to upgrade that and it runs his dual monitors just fine.

Which exact RAM kit do you have? All these fit your vague description:

Did you manually set the RAM speed/timings/voltage to the recommended specs in the BIOS? Did you do a fresh install of the OS with the new system, or are your trying to use an old install?

I manually set the timing voltages... the auto-detect was way off. It had them set as 7-9-9-25 and it's supposed to be 7-7-7-20 for working best.

After I changed them I ran both a CPU and video card stress test at the same time... 12 hours later no locking up or restarting... seems to be fixed.

Thanks much.
