WD 1TB External Harddrive showing as 2TB

Hi All,

I have a strange problem with my WD 2.5' 1TB external hard drive. I am not able to access any content from it.

It is showing 2TB as its capacity in all the partition tools but not allowing me to create partition with an I/O error.

Everytime I connect the hard drive, the device is getting recognized and showing in the the Device Manager under 'Disk Drives'. But it is not showing in the disk manager.

Is there any way to resize the disk capacity back to 1TB and get it into working condition.

Regards
Sri

  1. Did you happen to add it to a disk array like "just a bunch of disks"?
This would make it seem larger than it really is by combining more than 1 drive. Otherwise I would call the manufacturer cause it sounds faulty to me.
  2. Your drive is dead. :-(

Try one of the following diagnostics:

HD Sentinel (DOS / Windows / Linux):
    http://www.hdsentinel.com/

    HDDScan for Windows:
    http://hddscan.com/

How does Microsoft's UVCView utility see the external drive?

  3. thanks for the responses. It is a single external hard drive.

None of the tools are able to resize it.
I had to buy a new disk.
