Im looking to build together a file/media streaming server and could use some help on specs if that’s ok?
Network wise im currently im using Windows Media Player 12 on my Windows 7 MacBook Pro which connects to another old windows XP laptop across a wireless network with a shared removable hard drive attached with all the video files on. Im then connecting to this with my PS3 to play the files on the TV. As you can imagine the 2 wireless hops mean that any fast action scenes cause jerkyness when playing.
Im looking to build up something to sit connected to a gigabit switch that the PS3 would also be connected to by wire and use this machine for downloading and holding various files. Also connected to this gigabit switch would be my Sky DSL router (limited to 100mbps connection) and my Netgear Wireless-N access point which has a gigabit port on it -my MacBook and old laptop would then be connected wirelessly to this.
I currently have an old Athlon XP computer in storage hence the temptation to use bits from that in a new build but was wondering if it would be cheaper to just buy a laptop with a large hard drive?
In an ideal world I want something that runs pretty much silent and solid, obviously spec wise it doesn’t need to be anything flash for downloading and streaming. Parts wise I think I need the below:-
Motherboard with onboard sound, gfx, gigabit nic ideally would prefer a SATA raid controller on there and a firewire port as well.
CPU – anything standard dual core preferably Intel but im open to AMD suggestions
2gb RAM
2x 1TB 7200rpm Hard Drives in RAID 1 incase anything goes wrong as some of the data on the file server side of things I cant lose.
1x Small hard drive for Windows XP OS and any programs - im hoping this is possible?
Silent/quiet PSU
Netgear 5-port Gigabit switch GS605UK (im open to suggestions on this) - http://www.dabs.com/products/netge [...] 4294960298 Several CAT6 cables
Ive already got a standard ATX case, ATA Samsung DVD burner, LCD screen, USB keyboard & mouse.
Any info or help would be really appreciated.
Im from England and normally use www.dabs.com for parts.
Sounds like what you need is a WHS, windows home server. You can buy a pre-made one or build your own like I did. I use a amd socket 939 x2-3800 on an ABN-sli because it has 8 sata ports for lots of hdd's and has no mobo fans to fail. It does all my file sharing redundantly, even remotely with DDNS and does low level backup across the network incrementally of all my household PC's.
I need suggestions on a fanless PSU and fanless CPU cooling solution if anyone could help? I dont intend putting a high end GFX card in this machine however I may add some additional hard drives in the future.
