connecting 3.0gb cable and hdd to a 6.0gb motherboard port? will there be any problems doing this?

Yes
you can. SATA 3 is backwards compatible.
No issues as long as you have the correct SATA drivers.
But, be aware that there will be NO increase in speed between a HDD on either SATA II 3.0Gbps or SATA III 6.0 Gbps ports.
No HDD even comes close to the bandwidth limit(s) of SATA II, much less III.
