Can someone suggest from newegg which memory I need?

I have a dell xps 400 and looking to upgrade to add more memory, I don't know what kind of memory stick I need that is compatible with my motherboard. Can someone suggest some memory sticks that I can purchase from newegg? 1gb is what I'm looking for and any brand. I believe I need DDR2 SDRAM. Also, I looked inside my computer and the DIMM slots 1,2 are occupied but DIMM slot 3,4 are open, so do I need to fill both slots or can I just buy one 1GB memory stick and put into slot 3 and there will be no problems? or do I need to buy 2 - 1GB memory sticks and put into slots 3,4 in order for the memory boost? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In order to add more memory and get the best performance without spending unneeded extra for higher performance - we will need to know what speed memory you have now !! - there is no sense buying faster than what you already have since the memory all needs to run the same speed - likewise you do not want to buy any slower than what you already have if adding them or they will have to run at the slower speed of the 2 sets. So Download a program like CPU-Z (google will find it !) and go to the memory tab and see what it lists and also go to the SPD tab and see what it says there (either take a screenshot of those 2 tabs and post or type the info into a post here so we can help you get more of the same that you have already.

    For best performance you will want to buy 2 !! - If you buy just the one then your system will switch to running all of your RAM in single channel mode which is considerable slower than the dual channel mode it is currently running in and performance will be effected !! - Again I can not really suggest a module without knowing the type\speed\timings of the set that you have currently (no one should - since mixing timings\speeds\voltages of modules can cause stability problems with the system or loss of performance !!) - download CPU-z and get the information about the Ram currently in your system and then either post it here so we can help you find some that will work well with them or try to find new modules that match the Voltage (most important as the system must use the same voltage for all memory modules and too high a voltage can kill the module or too low a voltage can cause instability) - Speed (DDR2 memory comes in various speeds ie. DDR2-667 DDDR2-800 etc. - and all modules in the same system must run the same speed - though most can be run at slower speeds (ie. you can mix them in most cases) the system will need to run at the lowest speed ( if you mix DDR2-667 and DDR2-800 you spend more for the faster RAM but can only used it at the slower speed - wasting your money!!) - and finally the same Timings (or latencies) again all modules in a system must be set to specific timings and mixing them can cause instabilities but again faster rated modules can run at looser timings but you waste money buying higher performance modules when mixing with lower performance modules since all of the modules in a system must run the same timings (mixing can also cause stability problems if you do not set the timings correctly when mixing modules with different ratings)

    So really to be safest we need to know what you currently have in order to make suggestions on what to buy - ( you might get lucky and buy some that will work - but will most likely either spend more than needed and have them run far below their capabilities (since high performance modules can run at slower speeds to match what you have in most cases) or will get ones that just will not work along with the ones you have so you will end up either exchanging them or using just one set or the other instead of both sets.

  7. OK -from the CPU-z report it shows that right now you have 2 1GB Kingston DDR2-533 (PC24300) Modules that are rated at latencies of 4-4-4-12 at 1.8Volts

    So if you wanted 2GB more you should have gotten one of these 2x1GB kits ( Linkie ) - All of which are DDR2-533 1.8Volt modules running at CAS 4 just like those you already have so would match up best with what you had !!

    Since you already ordered that suggested module - you have a few problems :

    1.) the new module is rated DDR2 667 @ 1.8V CAS5 so luckily is running at the same voltage but is a different speed and latency module which means you will need to be sure that you run it at the slower DDR2-533 setting ( can try just adding it to the other slot on your MOBO and hopefully it will not change your current settings and work but if it does not you will need to remove it - reboot into your BIOS and manually set the memory speed and latencies instead of using AUTO (the settings should auto detect with your current modules installed correctly but you will need to set them at those settings manually so they do not change when you install the new stick if your MOBO changes the setting when on AUTO ) - Luckily most faster rated chips can run at slower speeds though not always but hopefully it will at least work !!

    2.) THe new module is a single stick which is going to cause your entire system to change to single channel mode which will result in your memory subsystem running slower ( you should have gotten 2 1 GB modules to remain in dual channel mode which means the memory can perform 2 operations per clock cycle instead of 1 which is what you will be forced to by using single channel mode) - Unfortunately you already ordered so you have a few choices - either live with it in single channel mode (Run for awhile and see if you notice a big drop in performance - it will vary depending on the rest of your system and where specifically your weak points are) - or order a second 2GB module bringing the system up to 6GB and getting you back into Dual channel mode ( if using a 32 bit version of windows this is a waste as 32 bit OSes can only address 4GB of RAM and the other 2GB will be useless.) - or return the new module and get the correct 2x1GB kit.

    EDIT : just noticed that your system is also an older one that lists Maximum RAM as 4GB - so your choice may be made for you as it may not work with 2GB modules (they are dual sided and older systems can sometimes not use dual sided modules or will only report one side of the module - so your new stick when installed may only show as 1GB - in which case you will definitely want to return it and get a proper 2x1GB kit as listed in my link !!! - In fact you may want to contact Newegg and explain the problem to them and see if the item has already shipped or can be cancelled (or delivery refused so UPS will return it to them) and you can switch to something else that will work !!

Thanks JDFan, I had a bad feeling when I hastily ordered it, I'm just in a rush because I want to play Starcraft 2 Beta already, I've had the game for over a week now, but haven't been able to play because I had to order new upgrades for my comp. I am going to return the 2GB stick and order the 2x 1GB sticks per your link, thanks again so much for your help. I have one last question to ask though, will I see a improvement in performance or speed after I follow your instructions? will my computer use all of the 4GBs now?

    But in the post you said 2 x 1GB Kingston DDR2-533 (PC2 4300) is there a difference between PC2 4300 and PC2 4200? I want to make sure exactly this time... so I don't keep ordering and returning... hehe...

What OS are you using the 32 bit or 64 bit version ? - If using a 32 bit OS then only about 3.2GB of the 4GB of memory will be useable (32 bit oses can only have 4GB of total addressable memory which includes the reserved system memory space and the video card pages which leaves about 3.2GB of space for RAM) but that is normal for 4GB systems and there should be improvement from adding the second 2GB to the system over it not being there - with the added memory there will be less chance of the system needing to use the swap file off of the HDD which can really slow games down. but having the 4GB should make that not happen.

    The amount of difference it makes will depend on the rest of your system also as games can only run as fast as the slowest part of the system but for the cost adding the extra memory should help if the rest of your system meets the specs for playing the game.

    EDIT : Not sure why the one lists 4300 - but yes the links show the proper speed ratings of DDR2-533 with a CAS latency of 4 running at 1.8Volts so would be a match for what you currently have !

    SO you currently have modules running at 266 Mhz.(3:4) but it is DDR2 so that is doubled for the actual speed of 533MHZ for your RAM modules with your FSB running at 200MHZ. thus the (3:4) setting (ie. 266x3/4 = 200 which is your FSB speed). thus DDR2-533 - and your latencies that you are running are 4-4-4-12-16 so you want modules that are rated the same or better which those linked are rated !

    For specific modules for the price I'd probably go with these ( LINK ) - THey are the cheapest but made by a good company (G skill) and are rated identical to what you already have

    Or for a few $ more if you want to stay with Kingston then these would work ( LINK )
