Hi everyone, :hello:
It's been a long time since I've posted, but I would like to know how do I overclock with this cpu and if are there any threads to help me out? Also I was reading on overclocking and it said I should update my bios, but others say not to update unless i find a problem with my bios. So yea any help would be appreciated thanks!

Specs: i5 2500k @ stock
PSU: 650W antec
GPU: Radeon 6870 XOC Diamond
MOBO: Asus P8P67 (haven't updated any bios yet)
CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 evo /w antec diamond 5 thermal compound I believe?
Case: Rosewill Challenger (stock fans)

Edit: I was able to overclock my cpu to 4ghz without upping the voltage and it gets a 74C max. I feel accomplished! :)

Somewhere on Toms theres an Official Thread that was made for OC'ing the 2500k, just cant find it right now. So heres my thread when I was first learning how. Keep in mind the settings for my board for VCore etc, may differ from what you need.

Thanks for replying Crysis, I've been waiting for a reply like a knight in shining armor and you fit it perfectly! I have a question though what do I do with the extra options like the overvoltage and all that. Also how do you know when your cpu becomes unstable?

most of the stuff should be fine if you just leave it as it is.

So basically you should just be upping the VCORE and Multiplyer. However you should be able to get pretty high (4.0ghz) before you need to raise the VCORE.

In order to test stability download Prime95. After you overclock it run, Prime and see if its stable. If its not then your computer will crash.

In terms of how long to run prime, i usually ran it for around 30 minutes. But thats because im impatient. An hour or two would be better

I have another question, does overclocking increase fps in games such as Crysis, Crysis 2, etc. (basically the new games that have good graphics)?

yes it does. After overclocking my 2500k from 3.3 to 4.5 i noticed a significant fps increase in Starcraft 2 and other games

I'm just curious, but is it true that the higher rate your cpu runs at the greater heat it generates? For example at 4.5ghz wouldn't you need quite a powerful heatsink?

yes it is true, the heat increases not because the multiplyer is set higher, but because for those speeds you need to up the VCore.

You have the Hyper 212 Evo. Which should EASILY get you to 4.5 on that CPU.

For most Cpu's it would be a push, but the 2500k is a great chip for overclocking.
Just make sure to monitor your temperatures with Prime95.

The only thing is that my case is too small thus the Hyper Evo 212 wouldn't fit in it :o

Anything lower profile, but sill with excellent heatsink ability?

I haven't seen my p95 temps ever go above 72c in a 22c room using a 212+ HSF @ 4.5ghz 1.38v - passes a 12 hour test. If I had AS5 paste on here I doubt I'd see above 70c - Very good for $30 air cooling.
