HD failed, or failing; please help my rescue data

Today, when I was working on my laptop, all my programs froze up. I could still maneuver the cursor but I couldn't select anything. I couldn't ctrl+alt+delete or hit the power button to put the computer to sleep. I had no choice but to hold down the power button to shut it down.

After this, I get an I/O error when I try to boot. I booted into knoppix and I am unable to mount the drive from it. I don't know what else to do right now to rescue my data.

I am (was) running Windows 7 ultimate x64. Please, if you have any advice on what I can do to get my data, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I booted off the window 7 disc and went into the repair section, and it didn't see the operating system. I went to startup repair and it said it couldn't fix the problem.

Why do so many people not backup there systems while the drive is good then beg for help when it's too late? If the data is that important to you, you need good backups.

Anyhow, you could try something like this adapter to hook the drive up to another laptop/pc and see if you can recover data from it, but at this point it may be too late. Spinrite may be able to help you.

Thanks, hawkeye. I do have most data backed up, just not the most recent data, which pertains the the projects I'm working on right now, which are going to be due pretty soon.

I think I remember that there is a way to copy the image from a disk without mounting it. Maybe I'm wrong about this. Anyway, I'll give spinright a shot. Thanks.
