I have a nice larger tower and most items in it are working fine, but I need to replace the CPU and I am leaning towards a new motherboard, cpu and ram.
The current motherboard is an Asus P4c800-E Deluxe with a P4 chip and 2gb ram.
I use the pc for some photo editing and gaming, its on almost all day, most days and 2gb of ram really doesn't seem to cut it with the photo editing.
This is what the hubby was looking at:
Asus P6T Deluxe V2
Intel Core i7 Processor
3 x 2gb DDR3 2000 (leaning toward Kingston or Corsair)
But to me that looks really expensive and kinda over the top. (Its like $740.00) He would love it if someone says oh yeah.. thats perfect, but I think I could convince him to a cheaper alternative if it would work as well.
Unless you do lots of heavy gaming it is a bit over the top. You'd also have to pair it with a good graphics card. That would add to the cost assuming that wasn't in it.
It'd be much cheaper to go with, say, a AMD Phenom II x3 720, a AM2+ mobo with either 780g or 785g chipset, with 4 gigs of RAM. You could then even get a Raedon HD 4850 graphics card for it, and still be much much cheaper than the other solution.
Now, that setup won't perform as well as a Core i7 of course. But both of these setups are far and above a P4 chip. You should be able to see a large difference with either one.

Well it would be nice to know the rez of your monitor and what / PSU / Case / HDD / ect you have.
But if your looking for a good system for games and light photo work on a rez of 1680x1050 or lower.
for that 740 you would spend on a X58 mobo ram and cpu, take a look at this setup
SAMSUNG DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223L LightScribe Support - OEM

Well as far as games go, you will see a boost if you just keep using the GeForce 7800 (But you would have seen the same boost with a starting dual core from a few years ago). But nothing like you would if you went up to a Raedon HD 4850.
Also it would be woefully slow if you were to use it alongside a i7 CPU relatively. Since at that point the i7 would be many times over too fast for the graphics card. That's why I said a graphics card would add to the price, since as far as gaming goes it's near pointless to go that far on one and be that far back on the other.
Off the cuff, newegg prices would be $120 for the CPU I listed, about $70 for the motherboard, about $50 after rebates for the RAM, and about $ 100 for the graphics card. So about $340 for the whole thing.

Thank you so much for your help! I see what you are saying about the graphics card. We hadn't thought of that.
I have researched what everyone has said and I am making the lower cost pitch to the hubby tonight. Thanks again!
