This post got ridiculously long so I decided to put everything not 100% necessary to understanding my problem in a spoiler; click to read the whole thing or for reference to parts and such, thanks.

Spoiler :

All of my build experience up to this point (8-10 computers) has been almost exclusively with budget HTPCs in mid to full towers so my new build has been an interesting change. Two factors spawned this build: 1. I took a semester off to do some self-study computer related work, and as time has gone by my laptops and even my HTPC/Main desktop have been unable to keep up. 2. My girlfriend got a job in Paris for 3 months. With those things considered I set out to build my most powerful and smallest computer yet.

Keep in mind this is still a "budget" build compared to what I'd like to have, but what can you do. Some parts were taken out of other machines I have but I'll include their prices for reference:

Intel Core i5 750 - $270 shipped with below motherboard
Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 mATX- see above
G.Skill Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) - $100
ASUS Radeon 4770 512MB 128-bit GDDR5 - $116 shipped
OCZ Vertex 60GB SSD - $153 (NE shellshocker + MIR)
Seagate Barracuda LP 1.5TB - $100
OCZ ModXStream 600W PSU - $48 AR
bGears b-Envi SFF case - $36 during Xoxide clearance
Total = $823

Unnecessary personal commentary on the components below!

Spoiler :

I had very little advance notice on the move to Paris, so all of this was thrown together in a little over a week and so there are plenty of things I would have/hope to change.

Case - I really never thought I'd end up having a case with two windows and LED fans; its not at all my style, but with the given time constraints and the convenient Xoxide clearance I couldn't say no to the b-Envi at $36. Honestly, its actually been a great case to work in, not at all what I expected from my first SFF. One of external bays comes with a removable enclosure for a 2.5" drive which I was able to mount my SSD into perfectly after a few minor modifications.

Motherboard - I was hasty in choosing my motherboard because of a good deal, and in retrospect the UD2 probably wasn't the best choice. One of the PCIE slots runs at 4x, which I've heard may be fine for my 4770 but I'm still unsure. The downside here is that with too little clearance for most tower CPU coolers, I'm most likely looking at something with a large diameter like the Zalman CNPS8700, but I may be limited here due to the proximity of the GPU to the CPU.

CPU - I still just feel like I should've gone with the 860, but I imagine I'll sell this machine or parts of it within 3 months and have that option then.

Cooling - Help? I knew this was going to be the major downside of a SFF build, but I'm convinced I can overcome it. I had originally not intended to do any overclocking, but reading about the 750s potential got me too excited to resist. I'm not trying to set any records here, I'd just like to run my ram at its intended speed, and maybe get a stable 3.6Ghz without burning up my new processor. I'm aware that as of right now options for 1156 coolers are limited, but they're trickling out and, more importantly, so are adapter brackets. When it comes to cooling I've always gone near overkill, and I'd like to keep that up.

As it is, my case is actually pretty empty, but airflow still isn't great. The case has room for an 80mm intake up front, where I put a Scythe Kama Flow, but there is not much space for it to draw in air, and the air that it does pass is at least half obstructed by the stiff 24-pin connector on the motherboard. I replaced the stock exhaust with one of Cooler Master's newer 120mm fans that claims 90CFM at 19dBa.

The biggest problem overall is really the fact that as of yet I'm unable to figure out how to install a serious CPU cooler, a task that will almost definitely involve modding the case. With the current setup I have about 130mm (possibly 135mm) in height before hitting the PSU, and about 45mm width before hitting the support rails. I'm either going to need a rather short tower, or one of the "flower"/circular style heatsinks like the previously mentioned Zalman CNPS8700.

I've also looked into some of the PCI exhaust fans, as I have no intention of using the additional slots, but I haven't been able to find any decent write-ups on their effectiveness. I also was thinking that there may be some way to make use of the two empty 5.25" drive bays (no intention of adding an optical drive) but haven't been able to come with anything.

So to wrap it up, let me say once again, I don't expect miracles. I know cooling is always going to be tough in an SFF build, but with that as a given, what would you all suggest doing here? Budget isn't really that important anymore as long as I can justify the expense, so throw any you've got at me. Thanks for reading such a ridiculously long post; here are some pictures to help you get a better idea of my present condition (I have not even started with my cable management, I know it looks terrible, no need to comment.)
