Can i put 2X512MB and 2X1GB for a total of 3 GB in my pc

I have a hp pavillion a1720n I have four ram slots, currently I have a 512mb paired with a 1gb, and another 512mb can i pair that also with a 1gb for a total of 3gb this is PC2-4200 DDR-2 ram. Thanks alot for your help ahead of time!!

Yes, the requirement for dual channel is that each channel has the same amount of ram in it.

Or on some chipsets they may not even have to match, though I have never tried this.

From our own (old) memory sticky:

Q: I currently have two sticks of 512mb pc3200 memory in DIMM 1 and 3 to reach the performance of dual channel DDR. Can I also add two sticks of 256mb PC3200 in dimm's 2 and 4 to reach 1.5GB of ram and still maintain dual channel performance?
A: As long as you have matched memory pairs on each channel, you should be able to run dual channel.

The only potential problem: Because you are using 4 memory modules, which require more power, your system may clock the speed of the modules down to maintain stability.

You won't see a big difference, more, if you think in mind that the 2x1GB sticks only will run at the same speed that the 512MB sticks
