Ask for advice on new build: Intel I5

First time to build a system.

The new one would replace my old P4 2.4G (Dell Dimension 4600).

I mainly use the desktop for programming (Fortran, Matlab, R), P2P online video (PPstream, pplive), games occasionally (not that enthusiastic, most games are pretty old such as starcraft, warcraft, Heroes, Diablo), websurfing.


I am inclined to choose I5 (and OC it a little bit) since it is very fast and especially quiet ( I tried AMD 945, but very noisy). My budget is pretty flexible (800-1500) and plan to get this one by early Nov.

Yes it's very quiet but so are others. 650W is clearly beyond what you need.

Don't buy the monitor without checking out the Costco return policy. You don't want to have to ship it off because it has dead pixels. As long as they will exchange it it sounds like a good deal. If not, try Best Buy or some such... you are right in wanting to buy it locally.

Add the other parts in there and I think you are set. no need for more fans.

Totally agree with you, but no need 4770, just get 4670. he uses ppstream and low end gaming..starcraft..diablo

OP, the RAM you suggested is horrible because it's 9-9-9 latencies at 1600mhz

Why are you so sure he doesn't need that graphics card . The way I see it, if he's still using his old Pentium 4 rig now, he'll likely be keeping this rig for a very very long time without doing any upgrades. Who's to say he won't buy Diablo 2 or other new games? With a $1500 budget, I'm sure he can afford to splurge a little on the graphics card.

It seems motherboard A has some issues with the memory and overclock. I hope B could overcome it. I think UD4P is more powerful for SLI and Crossfire and thus, ideal for I7 instead of I5, right? (Isn't I5 poor with SLI and crossfire?)



2) Case

There are too many cases there. What about case 2 and 3 ($55 and $50 respectively) compared to case 1 ($90)? To be frank, I do not know how to evaluate them. I just think the former two have more and better reviews than the latter one and thus might be a better fit.

3) I am not that picky with the noise. Maybe I am not clear with this!
My friend has two computers: one is Dell XPS 8000 (i5) and really quiet, the other one is ZT Systems (AMD Phenom II 945) and the fan is very loud. This might not be a direct good comparison since the latter one has better configurations than the first one.

4) I will also play some games but not to that extreme level. The most recent one is Warcraft III (Reign of Chaos, frozen throne). I hope my graphic card could handle some recent ones reasonably well, but I am not that demanding.

5)
If I choose HD4670, 400W PSU should be enough; the other pair 4850 paired with 650W PSU. Is 650W too much for HD4850 and after overclock cpu?

I would proceed to the parts pretty soon and am inclined to pick the DELL deal (Monitor + keyboard + mouse) TONIGHT.

Both mobos can only run x16 x4..that means when you crossfire in the future it will be a PERFORMANCE hit..which is not good. but for your budget this is the best you can do. it won't be much performance hit because it's only a 4770. but if you dont plan on crossfiring after, then both boards work.

I would pick the GA-p55-ud3r , if i were you if you are not willing to spend a little more to get UD4P

3.5GHZ will be easily done with the i5 750. Make sure you know how to do it, read articles/guides.

You should purchase an aftermarket cooler.
This is the best bang for the buck cooler.

Anandtech overclocked the ASRock board with no problems:

I don't trust the Coolermaster PSU being used in that article:

and think that could have easily contributed to the problem.

Finally, one reviewers results does not make gospel.

Well his budget is actually 800-1500, and I said that graphics card wasn't needed because of his current games..I didn't talk about future, so nice try. With his 1500 budget, he can get 5850, so what's your point.

"800-1500" = 1500 max. And I'm saying it will be useful for the future, I couldn't care less what your talking about. Are you gonna say that's a big fail too

Anyway, it's solved now, but as Proximon said, try to remember this is not a competition, we're all just giving our own inputs. You're so desperate for "best answers" that you resort to attacking other people's posts, at least that's the conclusion I've come to from reading some of your posts :lol:

As a newbie, I am really grateful to everybody's input. Everybody has different opinions and especially, I think sometimes, it can be more difficult if to figure out what the person actually wants (like me)
