Hello,
I'm moving to a new house soon, and I would like your help in the basic design of computers/hardware at home in order to reach a few goals. Here are a few details regarding the situation:
1. I mostly watch videos off the computer, most of which are of HD content.
2. I enjoy playing the occasional game, but nothing too intensive (the most intensive I can think of lately is The Last Remnant).
3. I plan on having two TVs, and I hope to be able to listen to music in 3-4 different rooms.
4. I'd like to have access to the same data from the different rooms, and control what is currently playing in each room.

What kind of configuration would you suggest to be able to get the specified end result? Should I have a computer in each room? Streamers? Wireless speakers? Should I use a home server? A special type of A/V receiver? A specific wireless router?

I'm not looking for specific brands or computer configurations, but rather get an idea of how it would work, if at all. I hope it's not an impossible mission, or rather a very expensive one.

Will be appreciative of any kind of help :)

A couple HTPCs and a NAS are simple enough and not too expensive, but remote control of those HTPCs get's a little more complicated. One simple solution might be a smaller wireless laptop to use as a remote.

Fancier solutions would include wall mounted touch panel in each satellite room.

Is there a way to avoid an HTPC in audio-only rooms?

An HTPC (or two) and a NAS is a good suggestion, especially for streaming HD content. However, if all you want is just to stream audio, check out Sonos.

Speaker wire?

If you want separate audio streams to your various rooms, you need individual sources, or a device that can deliver separate streams. Sonos seems like a good easy solution to this.

If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7 you can get a Media Center Extender for each room. The XBox 360 makes a nice extender.
