DVD/RW does not work

I have Windows XP Pro as an operating system.
My DVD/RW drive has been working fine until several days ago. It will not recognize a DVD and when I view the Drive in explorer is shows as a DVD-RW drive until I insert a blank DVD in the drive then it appears as a CD drive only.

I have tried Microsoft support - Mr. Fix IT it did not help results were your drive does not have writing capabilities.

I have tried editing the registry and removing the upper and lower filters - no help

Any suggestions?

More about work
  1. Try a lens cleaner. If that doesn't help, the DVD laser unit has probably burnt out. Time for an new drive.
  2. Check All connection for DVD RW and try again. If again it does not work change the drive bye new DVD RW
