Slow Laptop

So, this is a purchased prebuilt HP laptop, DV8000 if I remember right, now about 4 years old. Not sure where best to post this so I'm trying here. I reinstalled windows about 2 years ago now and of course it's booting a bit slow and taking awhile to really get going. After about 5 minutes it's ok. The only thing that boots is AOL IM, nothing else boots with windows. load time into windows is about 30 seconds so not to far off par but windows boot time takes awhile. I just ran a free registry cleaner for kicks. Just wondering if there is anything else that would be worth doing so I can avoid another wipe for a year or so. It's my wife's laptop so I don't use it much, I do defrag the thing once every few months though. XP, 512 of ram. AMD Turion 64bit.

Increase the RAM to at least 1 GB, and if its a 512 stick in there now, upgrade to 1.5 gb. You will see a pretty noticeable increase just by doing that. I just did that to a few laptops recently.

Yea more ram is critical on my list. Was wondering how useful cleaning all the dust out of it would be. yup, pretty sure it is that one.

Cleaning generally doesn't have any effect, just FYI, but it is wise to do it. People occasionally see benefits, but it usually results from a lot of dust.
