SATA backwards compatability

Do the SATA 3.0 hard drives work on the SATA 1.0 connections?

Another way to ask the question...What are the odds that a new hard drive will connect in my 5 year old computer?

  1. The SATA 3 hard drive would work, it would simply be restricted to the SATA 1 speeds.
  2. Worst case, you may need to apply a jumper to force the drive to sata1 speeds. Some older disk controllers don't negotiate the transfer speed the way they are supposed to.
