Case Fan for Dell XPS 400

Hi, I can't seem to find the right place to plug in to power cord from the fan to the mother board. The fan has a 3 pin plug with a place for a slide up the middle. There's one plug on the mother board that seems to be the right one but it is surrounded by a black plastic casing that doesnt allow the fan's plug to fit in. Please help and thanks in advance.

  1. Posting a picture of the board would really help.

    However, another option you have is to get a 3pin fan to Molex connector and plug it directly to your PSU.
    Some thing like these would work:

  2. There are no 3 pin fan connectors on your motherboard ( hooking up a non Dell fan will give you an error ).
    You'll need an adapter to plug directly to the psu;

    Shadow beat me to it, I must be getting much slower than i thought.
  3. well dells proprietary connector is 3 pin, but it has a different wire pinout/location and the port is as you noticed surrounded by black plastic. the only option, as the others said, is a molex adapter
    like this one

    or if you are replacing the fan cause the orginal dell fan died, you can take the plastic end offthe old one and put it on the new one, just being careful to put all the wires in the right places.

    Yeah, the older units do use 3 pin connectors, not the XPS 400 though.
    The fans in it have 5 pin connectors on 4 wire fans.
  5. oh, sorry about that LOL.
