It would be great help for me if someone told me if the Acer EM61SM/EM61PM AM2 motherboard can support the AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 3.4GHz AM3 cpu. My current CPU is an AMD Athlon 4200+ 2.2ghz Dual Core AM2 so it would be a good upgrade if it is compatible. Also, if it wont work, can you suggest a good CPU suitde for games? Thanks in advance.

Short answer: maybe

Long answer: Assuming you can get a BIOS that support the AM3 CPU, then you maybe able to do it. OEMs rarely support all CPUs and I doubt they will have BIOS support for AM3 CPUs.

My recommendation: Get a new 3rd party motherboard from Gigabyte, ASUS,etc and overclock your current CPU.

Physically the Phenom II X4 965 will fit in the socket but I doubt it will work. Support for AM3 processors on AM2 motherboards is a bit sketchy, some boards work and others don't, but none of them will work without a BIOS update. Seeing as your computer is an Acer, I highly doubt they bothered releasing BIOS updates to allow use of new processors(oems rarely do this).

I tried looking up a cpu support list for that board, but I can't find anything.

Being that it's an Acer board I wouldn't anticipate it working.
