If I purchase 3 identical dual channel ddr3-2000 kits and install them in an x-58 mobo is that the same as buying 2 triple channel kits. Thanks for the assistance.

I would say for the most part yes. Some RAM fanatics will say that for best results, you should be buying a 12GB kit since all the modules are tested together for compatibility, but realistically there aren't a whole lot of 12GB kits out there, so most people will be buying multiples of kits.
