I am transfering about 500GB of data from on NAS to another. Both are connected via ethernet by a router. I can only achieve transfer rates of about 2.8 MBPS while the specs on the NAS state rates of 30-40. What would be causing the difference in speed?

Hey JFuhrer,

A couple of thing to check would be the network card in either system, the type of Ethernet cable(i.e. Cat 5, Cat 5E, Cat 6, etc.), if your are going in between an active router and the network load on it. Check those in addition with the disk speed. (i.e. 5400rpm, 7200rpm, etc.) One of these components could be bottle necking the process.

Are you using RAID on the NAS? RAID-5 has very poor write performance, and if the volume you're copying to is set up that way then it could be part of the problem.
