Onboard sound card problem

I've been trying to fix a computer for my girlfriend's grandma and it is a hp pavilion a1423w. It has onboard sound and i havn't gotten any sound from it. I figured drivers, i found a few that were compatible, but no luck. In device manager it finds all the codecs but no device. the volume controls say i have no mixer and the computer says new hardware pci device found. Im sure that maybe the sound(not a new sound card) there is only onboard. The windows audio service is enable i've even tried to restart it I don't know where to go from here any suggestions?

Make sure you've got all of your chipset drivers installed and that the onboard sound isn't disabled in the BIOS (a possibility if this machine used to have a pci sound card).

do u have xp?
if its vista or w7 then i might know what the problem is........GO TO CONTROL PANEL........SOUNDS..........and there u choose what to enable and what to disable

there was good sound but she had a few viruses that i think deleted it i do have the latest chipset drivers and have already checked bios its a onboard module. i tried installing the drivers again for sound i found it but it didn't work the codecs and everything show up in device manager but no device

xp media center edition 2002 with sp3

Windows Update ?......... or Windows Restore.......... but you may re-install viruses if they're in there.
