Buying memory - should be in batches?

I've heard it is ideal that computer memory is from the same production batch (not just brand, but actual make & sale date).

Is this true for ALL memory in the computer, or just the memory within a channel (pairs or triplets)?

For 12GB for example, a computer builder told me it should be ALL 12GB, so I should buy it all up front (rather than 6GB now, then add my 6GB myself later)... is he just trying to push a sale??

On the other hand, Crucial says they just need to be bought in pairs (dual channel) or triplets (triple channel mobo, 6GB at a time)

Thanks

Crucial support should say a 'kit' is tested to work at the advertised voltage, speed and timing. Distributor, etailer, retailer or even Crucial do not sell RAM designated by it's specific production date.
