Best way to piece together new (old) PC?

I'm putting together a PC for my mom. It doesn't need to be fancy, just a 450MHz or something else cheap like that. Target price is $500. She only needs it for internet, music, etc. What's the best way to find all the components I need for the best price?

Are there any pitfalls in piecing together a system with cheap parts from different vendors?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks...

I always found Pricewatch.com to be the best way to search for the cheapest parts...For reviews check computershopper.com

Actually, I think you'd be able to get a good speed above 450 for that price.
