Widescreen monitor and standard projector problem

I have a mac mini with a widescreen monitor connected to a VGA multiplier which also feeds an Epson standard aspect projector beaming on a SMART Board. I can't mirror the screens because the computer turned off the tab since it is only registering the monitor, not the "second" screen. The problem is that I can't find a display setting that works for both the SMART Board projector and the monitor. I'd sacrifice width on the monitor if I could just get the 4:3 projector to look normal again.
