Can I use a hard drive from a laptop in a desk top

I have laptop that just went dark and wil not boost. I bought memory and makes a little better noise but immediately shots down. I have a deskto .They both hve Windws Xp. How can I transfer or replace the HD of the desktop with the laptop HD.

They are most likely not interchangeable - Size for one thing.

I'm a bit confused, if the laptop is bad, why are you trying to replace the drive in your desktop? If the drive is SATA you can just plug it in, after you get a drive bay adapter for the laptop drive. If the laptop drive is IDE, you will need an adapter for the data and power connections.
