I was wondering which RAM units will be the best for an Athlon II X4 620+GIGABYTE GA-MA785GPMT-UD2H build. I would be getting 2x2GB sticks and in a couple of years I will get more and fill the remaining slots. I read some RAMs do not work at their correct DDR3 1600 speed with this combination and there might be limitations in the total amount RAM that the motherboard can power depending on the speed of the RAM.
This my first build in 6 years so I am pretty uneducated about the current technology, any help will be greatly appreciated.
Just about any quality 2x2GB DDR3 1600 kit will work. The "problem" with the RAM not working at the rated speed is probably just due to users who don't set the RAM speed/timings/voltage correctly in the BIOS. I don't know where you're located, so I don't know if Newegg links do you much good. This is what I'd use.
The difference in cost is the OCZ Obsidian is running CAS9, where the G.SKILL is running CAS7. You want lower CAS speeds for better performance and the G.SKILL is a great choice in RAM.
One last question. Are there any issues with potentially using maxing out the limit of this motherboard with 16GB of G.SKILL RAM (or another brand)? In other words, do you know anything about limitations on using 16GB RAM with GA-MA785GPMT-UD2H? Thanks again.
You will have to purchase four 4GB RAM sticks to max out a 16GB, but there is no limitation on the MOBO up to 16GB of RAM. There is nothing in current use or in the near future that will required 16GB of ram. Really, anything over 4 GB of RAM isn't required unless you are doing heavy CS4 or CAD work
