I'm upgrading my system and I need to do a backup. I was about to buy an external hard drive: WD 500Gb. But somebody told me that I could anyway buy a new hard drive (current one is 320Gb), it'd have all the information I need and it's less expensive for a boost of performance.
Here is my upgrade:
E6400 -> changed stock cooler for a scythe mugen 2 (I should be able to hit 3.2Ghz).
Kingston 333mhz -> GI skill pi black 800 mhz 4-4-4-12
P5B dlx
G/C will upgrade later
Based on that, which hard drive could you suggest me. I use newegg.ca and ncix.ca
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319&T Most anyone on this forum will agree that this is THE hard drive to get. You can look into some cheaper alternatives from Samsung or Seagate, but the WD Caviar Black 640GB (the fact that it is the 640GB version IS important) will give you the best price/performance ratio and it's at the head of the class in terms of performance.
I wouldn't say its THE drive to get...that's debatable I suppose. The WD Black is a great hard drive, for sure, but the Samsung Spinpoint F3's are just as fast/faster for less money. One single 500gb platter instead of two 320's. The lower cache size will not affect performance. IMHO the F3's offer better performance/$.
Clearly impossible to find on ncix.com or tigerdirect.ca and microbyte.com
I got this however: Samsung f3 Shipping is damn expensive ... huh...
BTW, can anyone tell me why newegg.com can't ship to canada. It's like for me a bit more usefull to make one big brand instead of a .com one and a .ca. They only have like 10% of their product on the .ca version... =(

Yeah thats some steep shipping for something that weighs like a pound lol It's not a terrible price on the 1tb edition though I suppose...looks like the 640 is the best for someone in Canada then
