Hey all,

I was looking for a few expert opinions about the new 890 chip set MOBOs.

I was originally going to go with an 890 board because it would support the new Phenom x6 CPUs
BUT, ASUS has now stated it will release a BIOS update that will allow 790 based boards to be compatible with the x6 Phenoms. You can get SATA III and USB 3.0 on both chipsets

For instance.... compare this board

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128416&Tpk=ga%20790%20xta

to this one...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128435&cm_re=890gx-_-13-128-435-_-Product

BTW, I don't care about integrated graphics, so that diff is a nonissue.

So my question is... What value is the 890 chipset.

The first board is from Gigabyte. Did Gigabyte confirm a BIOS update for the PII X6 for that board? Secondly, there isn't much of a difference between the two chipsets, just native SATA 3 support. Gigabyte adds USB 3.0 and SATA III for later revisions of motherboards, but MSI and ASUS usually don't. The only "value" that the 890GX platform has is about a 5% better performance than the 790X and GX platforms. Other than that, you should wait for a while until revisions are made to the brand new boards because the 5% better performance isn't really worth the $30 premium. As usual, the $30 you save can be spent on other stuff.
