P6X58D PCIe Speed Question

The P6X58D Premium Motherboard is stated to operate:

3 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (at x16/x8/x8 or x16/x16/x1 mode)

I ordered two Nvidia 480 video cards for use in SLI. I would like them both to operate at x16 mode.

The premium motherboard has 3 PCIe slots.

The video cards run hot, so I want to space them between the slots. In other words, I want to place one card in slot 1, and the other in slot 3.

Will this force the card one to x16 and card two to x1 mode like stated above?

Do I need to put the cards in Slot 1 and Slot 2 to get card one working on x16 and card two working on x16?

Hi newcomer and welcome to the Tom's hardware forum.

For the SLI that you want at x16, you need install the GPUs in the 1st and 2nd PCI-E 2.0 x16 slots.

If you install one GPU in the 1st slot and the other one in the 3th slot, the SLI will run at x8, because is the max speed that the 3th slot support.
