Can you be a little more specific?

Is the hard drive new or previously used? If previously used, do you need the data that was on it?

What kind of computer do you have?
Is the drive internal or external? What model of drive?
What OS are you running?
If the drive has data, was it written from a different machine? A different OS?

The simplest answer to your question would be if you just bought a new disk and stuffed it into your PC. In that case, it would need to be partitioned and formatted.
